Chance to Shine

Diversifying the charity’s cricket programmes to integrate play with life skills development

THE CHALLENGE

Chance to Shine is a UK charity that currently supports more than 4,000 young people across more than 130 projects in areas of socio-economic disadvantage. They use cricket to engage these young people and in 2019, following investment from Sport England, they wanted to expand and diversify their programme.

THE SOLUTION

thinkBeyond created Chance to Shine’s Life Skills curriculum – a suite of educational resources to empower coaches to deliver themed Chance to Shine Street cricket sessions blended with life skills development.

We used our insights from Street session visits, discovery workshops, supplementary research, along with our combined expertise across sport curriculum and social change, to inform the resources development. We created sessions iteratively, testing sessions at Street sessions with coaches and participants, before refining them further and moving on to the next set of content. In total we created a Life Skills curriculum that included 11 individual session plans covering topics from building resilience, staying safe online, global citizenship, community cohesion and more.

THE IMPACT

The curriculum was rolled out in early 2020 with a 2 day regional training workshop to over 60 Street coaches, with 93% of coaches rating the quality of the course very good.

TESTIMONIAL

“thinkBeyond did an amazing job in developing our Life Skills Modules. They brought in some terrific partners and have a produced a set of resources that are helping our participants to develop their skills and knowledge whilst ensuring that the primary focus is on having fun playing cricket. They did an excellent job in researching and fine-tuning the resources, taking on feedback and working with us to produce an end result that will make a difference to the young people we work with.”
